The increasing need for cognitive engagement of EFL teachers within the online teaching communities also raises the need for advanced training that is provided to teachers for their professional duties of imparting knowledge. It could also be said that the increase in cognitive engagement of EFL teachers could become a very important element that could encourage them to get professional development training. The proposed study is intended to investigate the significance of MOOCs for increasing cognitive engagement of EFL teachers within online teacher professional development communities. Following the descriptive analytical approach, the researcher developed a questionnaire and distribute it amongst 81 of the Saudi EFL teachers to identify the role and effectiveness of MOOCs in increasing their cognitive engagement within online teacher professional development communities. The results showed that teachers are very keen to employ technology in the teaching process. Besides, the results also showed that attending MOOCs by EFL teachers to get engaged within online teacher professional development communities and develop their scientific as well as enhancing professional skills was high. Moreover, there is a need for providing training for the EFL teachers to improve their skills with computer applications and also a need to upgrade the computers at the educational institutions. Finally, the study recommended organizing training for the teachers to improve their technical skills to get better utilization of MOOCs and to update the current information technology techniques in the educational organizations.
